The Rossini Perez Institute (IRP) focuses on the valorization and preservation of the collection of the Brazilian artist Rossini Perez. In addition, it works in the field of artistic and curatorial studies and research, especially related to the languages developed by Perez, such as engraving, collage and photography.
Officially created in early 2023, the Rossini Perez Institute has as its starting point the artist's collection, left in his former residence in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. This collection was transferred in its integrity to Rio Grande do Norte - the artist's state of birth - where it is currently being organized.
The IRP began to be idealized in 2019, following an ancient dream of Rossini Perez. After his death in 2020, and with the support of the collection's heirs (and donors), the Institute began to take shape.
Over the three years between the idealization and the public announcement of the institute, we dedicated ourselves to carrying out an initial inventory of this collection. We also met with Brazilian researchers, curators and artists to understand how a private institution could best preserve this legacy.
Currently, the IRP is conducting a technical evaluation and cataloging of the Rossini Perez collection. In this process, the institute is structuring itself to raise funds and establish partnerships with institutions such as the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and Pinacoteca Potiguar.
The IRP understands the collection of the artist Rossini Perez as an expression of his work and aims to preserve it in its integrity. This collection consists of a set of prints, photographs, manuscripts, printed, audiovisual and bibliographic documents belonging to the artist, preserved in his last residency, in Copacapana (Rio de Janeiro, RJ). Before its transfer to Rio Grande do Norte, it was widely recorded and documented.
This phase corresponds to the technical processing of the collection, involving the following steps:
1. documentation of transfer and registration of the physical condition of the collection;
2. listing of the documents in a summary inventory, according to their classification as archives, book or visual arts collections.
Afterwards (and during the inventory), the collection will be processed, packaged, and cataloged for the publication of a research guide. For this, partnerships are being established with universities and research institutes interested in collaborating and researching the collection.
The systematization of the collection and the establishment of new research on this material should open space for a series of public actions that include exhibition programs, seminars and debates.
It is hoped that, with the establishment of partnerships with instances of the public sphere and civil society, the IRP will be able to obtain a permanent headquarters to house its collection and disseminate its actions.
